Corns, Calluses and Fissures

Corns and calluses are the buildup of excess hard skin at areas of high pressure on the foot. These can occur in many places — on toes, heels, the ball of the foot and even under toenails. A corn is differentiated from a callus by its deeper centre (nucleus). We recommend visiting your podiatrist to have any excess skin professionally removed.

The most effective way to manage and prevent calluses and corns is to limit pressure on the foot. This can be done by avoiding tight shoes and socks/footwear with heavy seams, and stitching. It can also be helped by addressing any mechanical issues with the foot itself that may place unusually high pressure on certain areas.

In extreme cases, calluses can result in fissures (cracks) — commonly occurring at the heels or under the first toe. Keeping the skin hydrated, and controlling excessive skin buildup are also key priorities in managing this skin type.
